The Star Chamber was the monarch's courtroom in England created by King Henry VIII, which could administer any punishment except death. There was no jury and over time it was increasingly abused by the English monarch to reach preordained, unfair results. Defendants were compelled to testify against themselves, and the privilege against self-incrimination developed as a reaction to this abuse.
The Star Chamber was formally abolished in 1641, but remains as a popular term to refer to unfair legal proceedings where the procedures are unfair or the outcome is perceived to be preordained.
