In Stone v. Graham, 449 U.S. 39 (1980), the U.S. Supreme Court invalidated as unconstitutional a Kentucky statute requiring the posting of a copy of the Ten Commandments, purchased with private contributions, on the wall of each public school classroom in the State. The Court overturned the state courts of Kentucky, which had upheld the constitutionality of the law. Justice Rehnquist was the lone dissenter in the case and wrote that the Ten Commandments had a secular impact on morality and law.
