Suicide bombing is a terrorist tactic. Contrary to popular belief, the majority of suicide bombers are not Muslim and the majority of such attacks do not take place in the Middle East. Between 1980 and 2000 the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (aka LTTE, aka Tamil Tigers) carried out more suicide attacks, 168, than all other groups combined. [1].
From 1980 to 2003 however there were 315 suicide attacks, of which only 76 were carried out by the Tamil Tigers. [2] In Iraq there have been 188 suicide bombings since August 2003, according to the Brookings Institute Iraq Index (although some research puts the tally as high as 400.) The deadliest attack by LTTE, in 1996, killed 90 people, far short of the 2,992 killed by al-Qaeda on September 11, 2001.
Suicide bombing is used by Muslims in Iraq against Americans, and in Israel against Jews. Occasionally, it is reported in Saudi Arabia as well.
The technique has been, however, most widely practiced secular Hindus in India and Sri Lanka. [3]
Fox News suggested that the practice should be called "homicide bombing," "suicide murdering," or "homicide murdering" to reflect the evil nature of the tactic. (Reference needed)
