Susana Martinez (1959), Republican, is the current Governor of New Mexico; She served as District Attorney for the 3rd Judicial District in Doña Ana County, New Mexico, having been elected in 1996 and reelected three times. She is the first hispanic womam governor in U.S. history. Martinez is pro-life and is opposed to elective abortion.

Martinez was born and raised in the Rio Grande Valley, Texas and moved to Las Cruces, New Mexico in the mid 1980's. She graduated with a bachelor's degree from the University of Texas at El Paso and later earned a law degree from the University of Oklahoma.

El Paso native Susana Martinez is officially the Governor of New Mexico. Hundred of people braved the cold this morning in the Santa Fe, NM Plaza to watch Martinez get sworn. Martinez left her position as the District Attorney in Dona Ana County to become the first female Hispanic Head of State in the nation and New Mexico's first female Governor. [1]
