The Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal in Agra in A.D. 1631-1650 in memory of his beloved wife Queen Mumtaz Mahal, who died in child birth. It is Islamic in origin.
The stunningly beautiful Taj Mahal is an enormous tomb built of pure white marble. Any number of other beautiful materials with different colours are used in the decorations there. Building the structure required the labor of 20,000 workers. Jahan also constructed the Red Fort, a red-sandstone palace and the Peacock Throne, encrusted with thousands of gems.
