Of course it's possible - but Thompson wasn't much of an "active" activist - besides the Woody Creek campaign he did little in terms of militating. He wrote. I guess it depends on what you consider an "activist" to be. He wasn't huge on organizing or actively trying to change politics because he saw almost all politics as corrupt. Again - it depends on what your definition of "is" is...errr, I mean of "liberal" is.I would say a lot of his viewpoints went way further left than most mainstream American liberals would be comfortable with. Which, not to open a bucket of worms, is one of the problems with the political discourse 'round here: everything that's not "conservative" is "liberal," so people who are barely on the left (like the Clintons or Kennedys) as compared to what the rest of the world sees as "liberal" get lumped in with hardcore Marxists and guys like Chomsky (definitely NOT a "liberal.")
