In 2022, it was reported that attendance at Russian Orthodox Church services in Russia has dropped to around one percent
This is a flawed measurement. Orthodox Churches are open 24/7 for people to come in, light candles, and pray. Orthodox churches have no pews. Christians are not required to attend formal Sunday services. The methodology to measure "church attendance" in Western culture does not apply to Eastern Orthodox, where parishioners drop in anytime of the day, before work, after work, or in between. - Christians have been gathering on Sundays, the Lord's Day, since the time of early Christianity.[1][2] The typical service of worship on Sunday lasted about 3 hours in total. The Bible says to not forsake the gathering of the saints (Hebrews 10:25). Conservative (talk) 16:32, May 29, 2023 (EDT)
- "So the Divine Liturgy is the common effort of Orthodox Christians to worship God. It is the primary public form of Orthodox Christian worship, wherein we celebrate the Eucharist -- Holy Communion with God in Christ. The version of the Divine Liturgy celebrated on most Sundays is that of St. John Chrysostom, the 5th century Archbishop of Constantinople, capital of the Eastern Roman Empire. We also use the slightly longer Liturgy of St. Basil the Great, the 4th century Archbishop of Caesarea, on 10 occasions each year." - Fr. George Konyev, Russian Orthodox priest[3]
- My guess (and it is only a guess) is that the persecution of the church for about 70 years under the Soviet Union with churches closed down and many priests killed, helped cause Russians' church attendance on Sundays to atrophy. Conservative (talk) 16:37, May 29, 2023 (EDT)
- Your guess is correct. Russian Orthodox learned to be extremely secretive about their beliefs and worship. Vladimir Putin's story about how his mother had him baptized in secret cause his father could have been kicked out of the party is not the first or only such story ever told. And it is happening again in Ukraine, where the fascist Zelensky regime is persecuting the Russian Orthodox Church. RobSGive Peace a chance 17:25, May 29, 2023 (EDT)
- The study is Eurocentric based on Western values, and is not representative of all Christendom. RobSGive Peace a chance 17:10, May 29, 2023 (EDT)

- In an Orthodox country, a parishioner could visit a church daily for say 5-15 minutes (which is common) to pray and skip a formal Sunday gathering, and not be counted in those biased statistics. RobSGive Peace a chance 17:16, May 29, 2023 (EDT)
- The early church was Eastern and they met on Sunday.[4][5] Christendom has been meeting on Sunday for 2,000 plus years.[6][7] Your contention is wildly anti-historical. You are making up religious history to bolster your rabidly pro-Russia politics. Conservative (talk) 18:11, May 29, 2023 (EDT)
