I dispute this definition. It's not general enough. Sometimes the standard of living goes up, meaning the average level of comfort, consumption, etc., goes up.
We need separate terms for "how most people are living now" and "the minimum that people really need". I don't know what those terms are, but I think standard of living refers more to the first. --Ed Poor Talk 11:48, 30 October 2010 (EDT)
