Why would Lamar Smith, a republican who has criticized the Hollywood for its liberal bias, be pushing a bill at the behest of Liberal interests? Just because some of the supporters of this bill are liberals doesn't mean that it is a liberal issue. There are people on both sides supporting and opposing this bill. for example, Conservapedia and Wikipedia seem to be in agreement over the issue, and Wikipedia is 6 times more liberal than the rest of America.

Do you have a source for your claim that Lamar Smith is a RINO?

I haven't been able to find anything online that suggests he is. The American Conservative Union gave him a lifetime Career rating of 92, and he is an opponent of abortions, drugs, homosexuality and fiscal waste. It seems that claims of him being a RINO started when this bill became unpopular, so I have to guess that calling him that is the GOP's way of distancing themselves from him, but copyright isn't a liberal vs conservative issue, and his support of this bill is not evidence of liberal influence, but the influence of big money copyright holders on both sides of the political spectrum.RachelW 10:41, 19 January 2012 (EST)

Lamar Smith, like many congressmen, started out conservative but is increasingly liberal. Search on "Lamar Smith" and RINO and you'll quickly see many explanations of how liberal he is. Notice how liberal Democrats have generally not dropped their support for the bad bill? Hollywood owns the Democrat Party, and the bill is for Hollywood.

As you keep putting the claim into articles, I should think YOU would be the one finding a reference for your claim. I'm sure you can find a hundred different explanations for why he is a liberal, probably by cherry picking one or two instances where he voted for a liberal issue, but his voting record, which I cited on his article, is clear: he is a conservative in almost every circumstance, and you really can't call him a RINO without condemning most of the GOP to that label. Perhaps you need a more concrete definition of liberal, conservative, and RINO, and not one that is based on personal opinion.

Also, your citation for Lamar Smith being a RINO says nothing of the sort, it calls him a moderate republican and cites nothing but some statistical process to back it up. Apparently, a process which ignores party affiliation and bill content is a good basis on which to judge someone's RINO status. Frankly, since nobody would ever admit to being a RINO, and the only sources you are likely to find are ones biased against the target of the word, you're better off leaving the word out of the encyclopedia. If you read the rules, gossip is not allowed on this site, and the word RINO is a form of malicious gossip unless it has a concrete definition that can be applied objectively.

By all means, post specific examples of where Lamar Smith advocated for positions that are definitely liberal, you'll paint a far more accurate and telling picture of his liberal views that way and you'll avoid getting in trouble with the people in charge of this site, who don't normally approve of uncited material.RachelW 12:26, 19 January 2012 (EST)

I think part of the problem here generally on Conservapedia is that the term liberal is used not to suggest someone supports liberalism but simply because they don't agree with the precise definition of conservatism that some subscribe to and they say or do something some conservatives dislike. Inevitably that leads to confusion for those who assume liberal means the kind of things you'd actually find in the dictionary. Adambro 16:58, 19 January 2012 (EST)
