Superb posting!!! I learned a lot from it. Thanks. --Aschlafly 14:31, 21 December 2006 (EST)

Need to distinguish better between refracting telescope and reflecting telescope. The latter gets most of its magnification from a parabolic mirror in its base, while a mirror at the parabola's focus sends the reflected light off to any eyepiece on the side. The former consists simply of two lenses. --Ed Poor Talk 18:40, 2 January 2010 (EST)

Galileo and the Church

  • Galileo's discoveries and his insistence on publishing them put him into conflict with the Catholic Church and even led to his being put under house arrest.

No, it was his insistence on saying that the theory of the earth going around the sun was true that got him in trouble. He was perfectly free to write about it as a hypothesis. --Ed Poor Talk 19:39, 5 February 2011 (EST)
