In Teamsters v. United States, 431 U.S. 324, 358 (1977), a complex age discrimination case concerning how seniority is handled in a union, the U.S. Supreme Court held in favor of the government's claim of age discrimination but note that a prima facie discrimination case requires "evidence adequate to create an inference that an employment decision was based on a[n] [illegal] discriminatory criterion ...."
