The film was well-received by both the audience and critics, with an 8.8 [[IMDb]] rating and 91% on [[Rotten Tomatoes]]. The film received twelve [[Oscar]] nominations, and won four, including "Best Original Score". The film made significant departures from the book, most notably in the Fellowship of the Ring is the absence of Tom Bombadil.  The film also expanded other portions, such as Saruman the White's treachery.
