The Little Mermaid Statue. Based on a fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen, it is a Copenhagen icon, one of the symbols of the city, and one of Denmark's biggest tourist attractions. The sculpture was put up in site in 1913.
Ellen Price, the primaballerina of the ballet "The Little Mermaid", and Eline Eriksen modeled for sculptor Edvard Eriksen (1876-1959) to created the bronze statue. It is visited by thousands of tourists each year (75% of all tourists visiting Copenhagen go to see The Little Mermaid). There are several copies around the world.
It has suffered several insane or vandalism attacks.
