Traian Basescu is the current President of Romania. He came into office in December 2004. Before winning the Presidency election, he also was the Mayor of Bucharest (2000-2004). In 2001 he, together with Romanian populist politician Gigi Becali, were elected as part of the European Parliament to represent Romania.
