A Trotskyite is a political activist who follows the communist teachings of Leon Trotsky and opposed Joseph Stalin's version. Many of them later became American conservatives, such as James Burnham, Max Eastman and Seymour Martin Lipset.

The 4th International was a communist organization founded in 1938 by Leon Trotsky. Its goal was to eliminate the bourgeoisie and establish a dictatorship of proletariats. The Fourth International was prosecuted by the Soviet Union's secret police, who assassinated Trotsky himself in 1940. The movement has had many splits and schisms. Only a few fragments survived the 1980s.
