The USS Hopper is guided missile destroyer that was involved in an encounter with Iran. On January 6, 2008 five Iranian Revolutionary Guard gunboats harassed the Hopper and threatened it over the radio saying ""I am coming to you. After a few minutes, you will explode" before turning away seconds before the Hopper would have opened fire.[1] The Iranians claimed that the incident was an "ordinary occurrence”.[2] Subsequent reports suggested that the radio message may have been from a local known as "Filipino Monkey" who had harassed Americans via radio in the past.[3]

The Hopper is named after Rear Admiral Dr. Grace Murray Hopper and is one of only a small set of navy ships named after a woman who served in the US Military.[4]
