Ulysses S. Grant was the President of the United States from 1869 to 1877. He was born on April 27, 1822 in Point Pleasant, Ohio. He served as a Union general in the Civil War and is credited for victory against the south. After his Presidency he had a cancer in his throat and was in great pain for the rest of his life. He struggled to write his memoirs but completed them and they provided money for his family after he died. He died in the morning on July 23, 1885. [1]

His administration is often considered to have been one of widespread governmental corruption, giving rise to the ironic term the "Gilded Age" in American history.

He was actually named Hiram Ulysses Grant by his parents but when he applied for West Point he was accidentally registered Ulysses Simpson Grant. He liked the name better than Hiram Ulysses Grant because it formed the initialls H.U.G.[2]
