The United States Geological Survey (USGS) is a government organization that focuses on the scientific fields of biology, geology, geography, geospatial information, and water resources. Their focus is primarily on the United States, but does also extend to the international community. The USGS was founded March 3, 1879 by President Rutherford B. Hayes.

Mission Statement

The USGS serves the Nation by providing reliable scientific information to describe and understand the Earth; minimize loss of life and property from natural disasters; manage water, biological, energy, and mineral resources; and enhance and protect our quality of life.
