The 1860 election was hotly divided between North and South over the issue of slavery. The Republican party nominated the Southern-hated, Abraham Lincoln. The south was divided in it's choice for a candidate. The Democrats split up and another party called the Constitutional Union all put up candidates for the presidency. No southerner voted for Lincoln. The results showed:

candidates popular vote electoral vote
Abraham Lincoln 1, 865, 593 180
John C. Breckenridge 848, 356 72
Stephen A. Douglas 1, 848, 593 12
John Bell 592, 906 39
