In 1916 Woodrow Wilson was largely popular for keeping the U.S. out of the devastating World War I, which was destroying Europe at the time. The Republican candidate, Charles Evans Hughes ran but because of Wilson's popularity in keeping the U.S. neutral he didn't stand a good chance of winning.[1] The results of the election were:

Shortly after winning the election Wilson decided to enter the U.S. into the European War.
