United States presidential elections began in the 1789 Presidential election with the election of George Washington. Since then they have all occurred four years apart as mandated by the United States Constitution and the first Tuesday in November has become the scheduled election day. The most recent presidential election was the 2008 election, which elected Barack Obama President.
