United States v. Wheeler

In United States v. Wheeler, 435 U.S. 313, 323-324 (1978), the U.S. Supreme Court held that Indian tribes have a sovereign right that is "inherent", which includes the right to prosecute tribal members for crimes.

This power, however, is not immune to abrogation by Congress. Id. at 323 ("the sufferance of Congress").
