If something is unproven, it means it has not been shown to be true or learned through experience. It can relate to a concept that can only be arrived at theoretically, or it could relate to a concept or condition that could be shown to be true, but had not yet done so.

In printing, a proof is a test copy done to check the printing plate before many copies are done. Unproven can be used to say that a test copy was not done.
