Uppity

Uppity (or "uppidy") is defined as taking liberties or assuming airs beyond one's place in a social hierarchy. Assuming equality with someone higher up the social ladder. The term was coined by Democrats and Ku Klux Klansmen to describe African Americans taking advantage of Republican civil rights efforts to promote black equality after the Civil War. In addition, it was also used by establishment Democratic leader and then–U.S. senator Lyndon B. Johnson while talking to his senior colleague Richard Russell, Jr., over conspiring to hold back the progress of black Americans and keep blacks on the Democratic plantation.[1]
