Uppity is defined as taking liberties or assuming airs beyond one's place in a social heirarchy. Assuming equality with someone higher up the social ladder. The term was coined by Democrats and Ku Klux Klansmen to describe African Americans taking advantage of Republican civil rights efforts to promote Black equality after the Civil War.
