Slovakia[1], officially the Slovak Republic[2] is a landlocked country in Central Europe, bordered by Poland to the north, Ukraine to the east, Hungary to the south, Austria to the west, and the Czechia to the northwest. Slovakia is a name of an independent state established in 1993 as well as a name of the territory historically occupied by Slovaks, which is slightly smaller than the territory of present-day Slovakia.
Demographics
The most reliable demographic data are provided by the official census as well as by other data collected through various government agencies by the Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic. The first modern census in Slovakia (then part of Austria-Hungary) took place in 1869, while history of feudal census in Slovakia reaches back to 1784. Since 1869, censuses have been taken at (about) ten-year intervals (1880, 1890, 1900, 1910, 1921, 1930, 1946, 1950, 1961, 1970, 1980, 1991). Census of May 26, 2001, for the first time used self-enumberation method, i.e. data were entered by the residents themselves.[3]
It is worth noting that present-day census records all people permanently residing in Slovakia, nine tenths of whom hold Slovak citizenship. Hereinafter the permanent residents of Slovakia shall be reffered to simply as Slovaks with the exception of subchapter on ethnicity.
