Valerie Solanas

Valerie Solanas was a feminist author who had a history of violence and prostitution. She wrote the SCUM Manifesto (Society for Cutting Up Men) in 1967 and sold copies on the streets.

On June 3, 1968, Solanas shot and wounded artist Andy Warhol in his studio. After her arrest, she was initially declared mentally incompetent to stand trial, diagnosed as schizophrenic, and involuntarily committed to a psychiatric hospital. About a year later she was found competent, pleaded guilty in court to the charge of assault, and was sentenced to three years in prison. She was released in 1971 and died in 1988.
