Walter "Wally" William Herger, M.C. (1945-) was the US Representative for California's Second Congressional District from January 3, 1987, until January 3, 2013. He is a Republican with a solidly conservative voting record.[1]

Early Life

Herger was born May 20, 1945 (age 78) in Yuba City, California and grew up on a cattle ranch. He graduated from East Nicolaus High School and, following in his parents' footsteps, became a rancher. From 1969 to 1980, he was the owner of Herger Gas Company, a propane distributor. Currently, he resides in Chico, California.

Political Career

The Congressman started his political career by being elected to the East Nicolaus School Board in 1976. He left the School Board in 1980, when he ran for and won election to the California State Assembly. Following the retirement of then Congressman Eugene Chappie, he ran in the 1986 election for the vacated Congressional seat. He was elected and duly sworn in on January 4, 1987. Herger has always beaten his opponents to be reelected by a landslide.
