The Wehrmacht was the main ground army of Germany during World War II. It was highly trained when it made the first invasion into Poland and the Slavic countries.
Towards the end of World War II it was called back to Germany. It had suffered heavy casualties and was now using old men and young boys as part of the so called "Volkssturm" (translated: "People's Storm"), a last effort to counter allied advances. It was organized and effective, probably the best of its time along with the SS.
