William Pitt, 1st Earl of Chatham PC (November 15, 1708 - May 11, 1778) led the government of Great Britain during the Seven Years War (or French and Indian War) from 1756 to 1763. During that time, he served as Secretary of State for the Southern Department. He later became First Lord of the Treasury and Prime Minister from 1766 until 1768. He is commonly referred as Pitt the Elder to distinguish him from his son, also William, Pitt the Younger, who also served as Prime Minister from 1783 to 1801 and 1804 to 1806. The city of Pittsburgh PA was named in his honor, as was Pittsylvania County VA, Pittsburg NH and Chatham NJ.
