1. Which do you think was the most important invention, idea or law discussed in the lecture? Include in your answer the "when, where, what, why and how." I think language is the most important idea discussed in the lecture. Ideas and laws and inventions require communication to have a lasting effect. The first recorded communication is in the form of cave paintings in Spain, dating back to aproximately 25,000 B.C. No doubt human interaction became significantly simpler as humans were able to expand their language to written spoken language, and then learned to use their language for primitive cooperation and sharing of ideas. Throughout the millenia language united large groups of peoples to form civilizations. Finally as different civilizations split different languages evolved. In fact modern english can actually be traced from india when primitive peoples carried different words to Asia Minor, Ancient Greece, and Germany. The Latin Language was formed from the greek language and the English Language was a fusion of the Barbarian languages of around Germany and Latin. As ideas become more clear by means of language civilization becomes more developed.

Superb analysis of the development of language through Greek and Latin. The cave paintings are of doubtful authenticity in my opinion; their estimate of an old age is probably not based on the paintings themselves. (Note some misspellings above. The correct spellings: approximately, millennia)

2. Pick one of the major ancient empires mentioned in the lecture, and describe basic information about it. Include in your answer a reference to how it compared with another ancient empire mentioned in the lecture. I chose the Egyptian empire. It relied on multiple elements. Egypt relied on its location to give it agricultural surplus. This is similar the Jewish civilization of Israel which traveled hundres of miles to find lush area to inhabit. Egypt relied on its army to expand, conquer other countries and use the resources of the countries. Israel in contrast was usually on the conquered side of wars. Egypts religion was a polar opposite to Israels. Egypts relied on Gods which were fabricated to glorfiy the kings and make the people follow them. Israel's God would, however, hold the rulers to standards so that if they were not observant they would be punished. The religion of the Israelites held them to moral standards but the Egyptian religion only held the egyptians to follow authority.

3. There are several tables in the lecture containing various estimated dates. Pick one of those estimated dates and explain either why it surprises you, why you think it may be wrong, or why you know it is correct. A date which surprised was that of Adam and eve, which said that they were created around 4000 B.C. If humanity had in fact been created as the author of Genesis recounted than it could not have occurred after reliable evidence of mankind's existence traces our existence back to. In fact the cave paintings I referred to in an earlier answer push mankind's existence back to at least 20,000 B.C. If Adam and Eve were the first man and woman then they were created before 20,000 B.C.

The cave paintings lack any corroborating evidence, and there are good questions to ask about whether the paintings were dated or simply some sediment nearby (probably the latter). If mankind were as old as 20,000 B.C., then I would expect writings or civilizations, which are much older than what has been discovered, to be found.
