Writing Homework Four
Part A: by hand, correct errors in the following passage:
My friend is a hero to me and my brother, but he dosn’t even know yet how much we look up to him. You know, it is hard to tell someone how much they mean to you sometime. I mean, what can one say, “your my hero”?!
Through life you do what you can, get what we need, and spending our time on the mundane. The only time when we do take a brake and rise above stuff is when we pray.
Enough; Its time to make my final point. If my grammer is this terrable then no one is going to hear what I said anyways. Listening to me, I’m sure you’d agree.
Look up “gerund” and “participle” in the grammar textbook (see glossary pp. 205-10). Then complete exercise 44(b), p. 168, which uses Longfellow’s poem on pp. 25-26 after the glossary. Grade yourself (answers p. 80A in back), note score here: found __ / __
Part B: Write a total of at least 750 words on one or more of the following topics. You will receive a score each for (i) technical correctness and (ii) style/substance.
1. “To err is human; to forgive, divine.”
2. Choose one aspect of nature (including humans), which could be a sunrise, a daffodil, a butterfly, a rainbow, or anything else – and describe what you like about it, such as its beauty and/or connection with God.
3. The Supreme Court said the death penalty should not apply to crimes committed by teenagers less than 18 years old. Try to persuade the reader of your view.
4. Describe what you think is the most persuasive parable in the Gospels, and why, and why it should persuade the reader of your essay.
5. It’s time to abolish the United Nations and all forms of global government.
6. Humor can be an effective tool of verbal persuasion and, if you’re very good at it, written persuasion also.
