Big Sandy, Texas

Big Sandy is a town in east Texas. It was founded due to two railroads intersecting there (and it remains a crossing for two major Union Pacific lines).

From 1973 to 1975 the local high school (the Big Sandy Wildcats, not to be confused with another high school in Deep East Texas named Big Sandy) won three state championships in football (the 1974 team were co-champions with Celina, a notable program in its own right, while the 1975 team set a then-national record 824 points over 14 games). Notable players on that team were David Overstreet (who later played for the Miami Dolphins) and Lovie Smith (who later coached at the college and professional levels).

Just east of the city (on US Highway 80) was the former home of Ambassador College, which was affiliated with the Worldwide Church of God before the campus was sold (after the death of its founder, Herbert W. Armstrong, and the new denominational leaders renouncing much of his theology). The campus is now the headquarters of the Institute in Basic Life Principles, the controversial sect (some go so far as to label it a cult) founded by Bill Gothard, known for its legalistic teachings on strict obedience to authority and homeschooling (the Duggar clan, featured on TLC, were adherents). Even so, the area is still a hub for much of Armstrong's teachings.
