Onshore Wind Farms utilizes wind turbines to generate electricity and is among the fastest growing utility-scale renewable energy technologies. The best wind resources are located in areas that receive strong, sustained wind speeds at elevations fifty to eighty meters above the ground. [1]

Large Scale Onshore Wind Farms

  • Alta Wind Energy Center - Also known as Mojave Wind Farm, is a 1,550MW wind farm in Kern county, California. [2]
  • Los Vientos Wind Farm - Is a 912 MW wind farm in Starr and Willacy counties in South Texas. [3]
  • Shepherds Flat Wind Farm – Is a 845 MW wind farm spread over 30 square miles of area in the Morrow and Gilliam counties of Oregon. [4]
  • Meadow Lake Wind Farm - Is a 801.25 MW wind farm located in Indiana. [5]
  • Roscoe Wind Farm - is a 782 MW wind farm located 45 miles south-west of Abilene in Texas. [6]
  • Horse Hollow Wind Energy Centre – Is a 735 MW wind farm in Taylor and Nolan counties, Texas [7]

Extreme Weather Operation

  • Ross Island Wind Farm (RIWF) – Is a .99MW three-turbine wind farm located on Crater Hill, Ross Island, Antarctica. It is the southern-most wind farm in the world and supplies power to and links the electrical grids of both New Zealand’s Scott Base and the US’ McMurdo Station. The turbines offset a diesel fuel usage of 120,000 gallons a year. [8] [9]
  • Kotzebue Electric Association runs a 915KW wind farm for the Alaskan community of Kotzebue, north of the arctic circle. [10]
  • Mawson Antarctic research station had two 300 kW wind turbines installed in 2003. In 2017, one of the turbines suffered a critical failure and is no longer operational. [11]
  • Dhofar wind farm is a 50 MW industrial-scale wind farm in the Middle East, capable of producing power when temperatures reach 113 degrees. [12] [13]
