University of Wisconsin

You asked about the University of Wisconsin being a party school... the thing is, it's a humongous state school—one of the humongous state schools that happens to be a first-rate university. What they have in common is that any student that goes to a school like that needs to take charge of their own education. Students that drift in thinking that someone is going to tell them what courses to take can have problems. At any school with more than a few thousand students, a student had better be prepared to drive their education, not ride.

Where the "party school" thing comes in is that pretty much all humongous schools are party schools in the sense that partying is there for anyone who's tempted by it. And flunking out is common and certainly nobody at the university is going to blink twice about it; a student that's on a route that will lead to flunking out is going to have to figure it out for him- or herself.

On the other hand, for a student who has the right attitude, these huge schools have an enormous scope to them. They have majors in subjects you've never heard of. In addition to the main library, they have scores of small departmental libraries peppered here and there around the campus, and if you're interested in (say) psychology, and the school has a psychology department library, an hour there from time to time is an education in itself. They have all sorts of laboratories and things peppered around, and all of this stuff is an opportunity to find things you're interested in and careers that have never occurred to you.

Not every small liberal arts college has programs in (say) sports management or wildlife ecology.

It's very interesting to be on a campus that has everything academic: not just a medical school and a law school, but a school of agriculture and a school of education and a school of engineering and a school of music. Take a look at the list of UW departments.

And believe me, any campus with tens of thousands of students covers all parts of the political spectrum.

One of the interesting things about Madison is that it is the state capital, which is within walking distance of the campus so there are opportunities to attend (and even participate in) public hearings and so forth...

Among the opportunities a big state school offers is the opportunity to party and flunk out. Dpbsmith 06:09, 30 April 2007 (EDT)

P. S. Big schools tend to have bigger ROTC programs... although I don't believe Wisconsin is a particularly good choice for ROTC, I've never looked into that. Dpbsmith 06:10, 30 April 2007 (EDT)

Well, you'd asked about whether the University of Wisconsin was a party school. Which it is. I thought perhaps you or someone you knew might be considering it. The points I was trying to make were:
a) Whether a school is a "party school" depends more on the student than it does on the school.
b) A school like the University of WIsconsin, or Rutgers, or Texas A&M can be an excellent choice for some students and a bad choice for others.
Cheers. Dpbsmith 08:34, 30 April 2007 (EDT)

Any ideas?

Why is he protecting all those images? Just curious if it is something I missed. Flippin 12:50, 2 May 2007 (EDT)

Because you can replace images with other images like if you want to crop something out or fix messed up colors, however this can be abused for hilariously evil purposes (replacing them with really nasty stuff). --Sulgran 08:12, 3 May 2007 (EDT)

I'm surprised it took someone so long to figure this out ... I noticed that weakness a while ago, but was good and didn't mess around. Jrssr5 13:04, 3 May 2007 (EDT)

AmesG

It appears that it is resolved, it started out as a concern because I took what was said as meaning idealogical blocks can happen, which I knew to be against policy. So I pointed it out, attempted to explain why I was concerned/confused, maybe not clearly enough and that back and forth happened. I just wanted to make sure all users were on the same page and aware of the rules. thanks! Jrssr5 09:33, 7 May 2007 (EDT)

Homeschoolers' acceptance rates

Will N., I hope you'll draft a new sentence or two for the Homeschooling article. The comment that 10% of Harvard students are homeschooled was wrong, but the point is still an important one to make; it just needs to be accurate.

The link you found, [2] is excellent and should be in the article somewhere, somehow.

Can you write a short one-or-two-sentence summary of the main point the article is making?

(By the way, I'd consider using Williams as the example rather than Harvard, because the article says more about WIlliams and quote a Williams College admissions officer. Williams is very well known and U. S. News ranks it the as best liberal arts college in the U. S. [3]). Dpbsmith 10:59, 9 May 2007 (EDT)

Luftwaffe-logo-large.jpg

This image does not appear to be what it says on the tin. Can you at least provide a caption for it on the Luftwaffe page? It is generally good form to caption all images so that they can be related to the article. Also, does it have appropriate copyright clearance? We don't want CP getting into trouble. BrianCo 23:34, 20 May 2007 (EDT)

just wanted to add to this, I'm trying to make your photos look better (such as on the Battle pages) and it would help if you could go in and source your images. It would be nice, for example, in the Battle of Bunker Hill article to let the reader know the title of the painting and who painted it, with a date if at all possible. --Colest 11:15, 22 May 2007 (EDT)
Well, I'm just sorta learning as I go too. :) So here's what you can do. If you click on one of the images you have already uploaded, it will load it's page. Then there is an edit tab like normal, and it will give you a space where you can type in where you got it, what it is, etc. You might have some problems though because I noticed that a lot of the images got 'protected' status, which means you can't edit them... however you can look at the pictures I uploaded on Great Pyramid of Giza and Caldera for examples.
As far as formating the images within an article, I've just opened up the source for pages that had existing pictures that I thought were formated well and copied the code and then modified it to look how I wanted it too. I'm more than willing to play with the formatting in the articles, if you can get me the pertinant information. I hope this helps. --Colest 12:11, 22 May 2007 (EDT)

Finland Map

Where did you get that map? it has a Magellen logo on it, I'm assuming its copywritten? --Colest 12:31, 25 May 2007 (EDT)

What you need to look for is something that says Public domain, or Stock Image/Photo or something like that. Most stuff that you just find from a Google search will have some sort of copyright involved in it, which could get this site in trouble for displaying it without consent. There are a few links on my user page of public domain sites, I will try to keep adding to it if you'd like to use it as a reference point, plus I'd appriciate finding out about any sites you might come across. --Colest 12:36, 25 May 2007 (EDT)

Will, thanks for your great work, but we disfavor the insertion of "stub" into articles unless there is a real justification. Unlike Wikipedia, we like concise entries here. New Military Entries

Will, we want to add to our military entries, and there are many good public domain military sites that are a superb resource for information. As public domain, their information can be copied without any copyright problems. Sites that end in .gov or .mil are typically public domain and unrestricted for copying, unless they say "Copyright" or state otherwise. You can check to see if there are any copyright terms on the site, but if not and if it is a .gov or .mil site, then it is probably public domain. Ask me if any questions. Thanks and Godspeed.--Aschlafly 13:09, 7 June 2007 (EDT)

2 Questions/Problems

(Thanks for the warm welcome.)
