Da Vinci was commissioned to paint by Ludovico il Moro, from 1496 to 1498, in the refectory of the Dominican convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie.<br>This was extraordinarily hard '''work''', the technique used to apply the paint to the wall is called [[fresco]], not "a drawing". The technique involves a great deal of knowledge and experience to know how the paint and plaster will dry; how much color medium, (in this case egg tempra), could be added to the plaster and still allow the latter to dry correctly; what sort of colors will be produced.
