Well, didn't people catch it from others? And wasn't it disfiguring? And isn't it true that there was no known cure until the 20th century?
We could, however, stress that it was always much less contagious than people though it was. But that would need to be documented.

Whether isolating lepers was a good or bad thing, fair or unfair to leprosy carriers, should be presented in an even-handed way.
