Pluralism describes a system of tolerance for different types of ideas, persons, or groups. For example, "religious pluralism," often used to describe the United States, indicates a policy allowing different religious groups exist coequally with one another.
Pluralism is the opposite of xenophobia (hatred of strangers), majoritarianism and nativism (giving preference to the native born and attacking immigrants who bring different values of ways of life).
