Rutgers University is an important university in New Jersey. It is a public university run by the State of New Jersey. It is one of the oldest universities in the country.

Rutgers is famous as the "birthplace of college football." The first intercollegiate game of football took place between Rutgers in Princeton in 1869; Rutgers won.

Rutgers was the alma mater of the famous singer Paul Robeson, who sang Old Man River in the original and film versions of Showboat.
