Microscopes are purportedly instruments that enable the user to view objects smaller than the eye is capable of visualizing. The term microscopic refers to objects allegedly too small to see with the naked eye, thus requiring a "microscope" to see.

Microscopes are frequently used by scientists, such as those arguing in favor of human cloning, stem cell research, and evolution. While some controversy exists in regard to many of these matters, the microscope itself has generally been regarded as a reliable scientific instrument. Nevertheless, like all scientific instruments, it is capable of misuse and misapplication.

Thus far, for example, little investigation has been done into the possibility that microscopes may cause the existence of the very microbes they purport to offer us a glimpse at. It is also possible that the scientific method may itself be at fault. Further research into these matters is necessary.
