A signature is the writing, in one's own hand, of one's name on a letter or other document as a form of verification. It can, by extension, also mean a distinctive personal characteristic, or something particularly associated with oneself: thus chefs may have a signature dish on their menu. The scientific study of signatures and handwriting is known as graphology.
