The Directory was the Executive arm of the French Revolutionary government set up by the Constitution of the Year III. It lasted four years, from November 1795 to November 1799. The five members were chosen by the Council of Ancients from a list drawn up by the Council of Five Hundred. The authority of the Directors was limited to diplomacy, military affairs and law enforcement.
