A shadow is a region of darkness, caused by the placement of an obaque object between a surface and a light source. The length of a shadow cast by the sun can be used to gauge the time; it is shortest at noon (although it will usually still cast a shadow.)
The absence of direct sunlight tends to mean the shadow is colder than the area around it.
