A covalent compound is a molecular compound whose atoms share electrons. In an ionic compound, the electrons are taken from one atom by another atom. Most compounds are not purely covalent or purely ionic; they are a mixture of the two. For example, water is a covalent compound but the electron stays more on the oxygen side than the hydrogen side.
