American History Homework 9

1. The election of 1960 was similar to the 2008 election in several ways. In 1960, John F. Kennedy was elected President by a fairly narrow margin over Richard Nixon. Kennedy was extremely popular and an excellent talker, as is Barack Obama (with prepared text). Nixon had been involved in politics for a long time, although not as long as John McCain is. Some have stated that it was only Kennedy’s charisma and personality in speeches that won him the election—Obama’s personality captured America in much the same way.

Excellent analysis, although I don't think it was Obama's personality that made the difference. In fact, I dare say that there is no personality there to be found.

2. Imperialism is in many cases beneficial to the people of the smaller nation (country A). They get the protection of the larger nation (country B) and benefits with trade. However, many citizens of country A might resent the fact that they are not governing themselves, regardless of how well country B governs them.

Good. And your ultimate view is ...?

3. Progressivism can be a very good thing. The “better government” idea recognizes that, as Ronald Reagan said, “Government is not the solution; it’s the problem.” The central problem with progressivism is that different views of what “better government” is can influence what the “improvements” are. For example, one person might believe that better government meant more federal inspections of facilities; another might believe that less regulating of businesses was better.

Superb.

4. This cartoon depicts the position United States after the insurgent Filipinos were defeated. William McKinley, shown holding the “Philippines,” (represented by a skinny-looking Filipino) can return the Philippines to Spain by hurling him off a cliff. The figure at the left is a person representing the world, who is intently watching McKinley to see how he will deal with the Philippines. Clearly, the cartoonist did not favor returning the Philippines to Spain.

Excellent.

H1. There is really no other way to end insurgency in an area than to simply kill or capture all rebels. Insurgents are not dependent on things which regular troops need: a structured command, logistics, and expensive equipment. In fact, with the support of the population, it is virtually impossible to conquer them. In the words of one American soldier in Vietnam, “... [I]t became necessary to destroy the town to capture it.” The Americans took the only way out: kill all the insurgents in the Philippines.

Good analysis. Will use as a model.

H2. In recent elections, the media has villainized the Republican Party as being the cause of many problems are nation faces. If a Republican makes a gaffe of any sort, or may have some problem (for example, Sarah Palin’s daughter’s pregnancy) the media capitalizes on it to the fullest. If the same happens to a Democrat, very little happens—for example, Barack Obama’s terrorist connections.

In the 1890s, “yellow journalists” wrote down only what they wanted people to know. One excellent example is of an incident which occurred shortly before the Spanish-American War. Several Cuban women were arrested aboard a United States merchant vessel by Spanish police on suspicions of aiding the Cuban rebels. They were stripped and searched by female Spaniards. However, the newspapers ran a headline about how they had been searched by male policemen (with a picture of several huge, bearded men staring at a near-naked woman).

Superb analysis, and an excellent example to back it up. Well done!
Terrific paper. Perfect: 60/60. Congratulations!--Aschlafly 20:53, 15 November 2008 (EST)
