65-8 BC Foremost Roman lyric poet during Augustus' rule. Odes, Epodes, Satires, Epistles, Ars Poetica, etc. ; coined phrases "seize the day," "the golden mean," and "Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori."
Horace was privy to the Circle of Maecenas, an elite group of poets under the direct sponsorship of Augustus, that largely produced panegyrical works.
