|Oil represents Holy Spirit at salvation. Foolish virgins can only perform good works via their own human effort.

|But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.
|"But the sensible ones took oil in vessels with their lamps.
|The wise have oil in vessels since they have a choice to empower good works (light their lamps) via motivation from the Holy Spirit or by their human effort.

|While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept.
|"While the bridegroom took time to come, they all grew drowsy and slept.
|None of them were shining their lamps, they were all acting like sinners.

|And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out.
|"And the foolish ones said to the sensible ones, 'Give us some of your oil; our lamps have gone out.'
|The foolish virgin's lamps or good works may have looked the same to people, but God can tell who has the oil of the Holy Spirit.
