One World Trade Center

One World Trace Center or 1WTC, as it is commonly known, is the main building of a complex constructed to replace the World Trade Center twin towers destroyed in the September 11th, 2001 attacks in Manhattan, New York City. Formerly known as Freedom Tower, the design for the complex was chosen from a number of designs submitted to a contest.

The complex consists of two towers, a 105-story skyscraper, occupying the former location of the former 6 World Trade Center, and a smaller tower next to it. 1WTC, stands 1776 feet tall, an homage to the United States' Independence Date,[1] making it the tallest building in the United States, the tallest in the western hemisphere, and one of the tallest buildings in the world.[2]

At the base of 1WTC is be a memorial to the victims of the terrorist attacks. The memorial consists of two open pools of water that sit in the footprint of the two main towers. There is also a museum present on the site that commemorates the victims of 9/11. The museum opened to the public in May 2014 and encompasses thousands of documents, pictures, and video relating to the attacks.[3]

The building was originally slated to be completed in late 2010 to early 2011.[4] However, delays pushed back the opening of the tower until November 2014.[5]

In November 2014 the 1WTC was officially opened.[6]
