Pregnancy is a term often used to refer to the physical state of many animal species (most notably humans) in which an individual is carrying a developing infant inside of its womb. While female individuals of a species are typically thought of as being the only members of a species capable of pregnancy, there are some cases in which a male individual, and not a female, is responsible for harboring the developing infants within his body. Additionally, the duration of a typical Pregnancy varies significantly between species.
Pregnancy typically follows successful copulation between a male and a female individual of the same species, though modern medicine has made available alternate means of inducing pregnancy. Following pregnancy, an infant individual of the same species as the male and female Parent individual is expelled from the womb of the pregnant individual. In some cases, multiple individuals can be produced and expelled from a single pregnancy. In other, less fortunate cases, miscarriage has been known to occur.
