One of seven children of Loyola and Stanford Bardwell, Sr., he and all his siblings were all named for prestigious universities, [[Harvard University|Harvard]], [[Duke University|Duke]], [[Princeton University|Princeton]], [[Auburn University|Auburn]], [[Cornell University|Cornell]], and [[Tulane University|Tulane]] (his . His late sister was T'lane Bardwell Berry). Bardwell graduated from Baton Rouge High School and attended the business school at the [[University of Michigan]] at Ann Arbor, [[Michigan]], and later graduated in 1965 from the LSU Law Center. Bardwell worked in an adult [[Bible]] study and prison ministry at the First [[Presbyterian]] Church of Baton Rouge.
